Retinal diseases include various conditions that affect the retinal tissue, impacting how light is captured and transmitted to the brain. Because the retina consists of neural tissue, damage to this layer is often permanent if not treated quickly. Our specialists aim to identify the specific cause of vision distortion, whether it is vascular, degenerative, or structural, to provide immediate treatment.
We use high-definition OCT to see individual retinal layers in near-microscopic detail. This helps our specialists detect fluid accumulation, macular holes, or traction before they are visible during a standard exam. It is our primary tool for monitoring the effectiveness of anti-VEGF injections.
For managing vascular diseases like retinal vein occlusions, we use FFA to map blood flow within the eye. By injecting a specialized dye, we identify exactly where vessels are leaking or where the retina lacks oxygen, allowing for precise laser or medicinal treatment.
Standard exams cover about 30% of the retina. Our widefield imaging technology captures up to 200 degrees of the retina in a single image. This is crucial for spotting peripheral retinal tears or early-stage detachments that traditional equipment might miss.
When the internal view of the eye is blocked by blood or dense cataracts, we use B-scan ultrasound. This imaging technique lets us "see" the retina’s position and health through opaque materials, which is vital for planning emergency sight-saving surgeries.
We specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the back segment of the eye, including:
– Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD): Managing both “Dry” and “Wet” ARMD to help maintain central vision.
– Retinal Detachment: Providing urgent surgical care for retinal tears and detachments to prevent permanent blindness.
– Macular Hole & Epiretinal Membranes: Performing precision microsurgery to fix structural issues in the macula, which is the center of vision.
– Retinal Vascular Occlusions: Treating “eye strokes” caused by blockages in retinal veins or arteries.
Following NABH guidelines, we provide a range of medical and surgical treatments designed to stabilize the retina:
– Intravitreal Injections: We administer Anti-VEGF agents (Lucentis, Eylea, PDS) and specialized steroid implants for macular edema and ARMD.
– Retinal Laser Photocoagulation: Using precision laser therapy to seal leaking vessels or secure retinal tears before they progress to a detachment.
– Micro-Incisional Vitrectomy Surgery (MIVS): Performing “stitchless” 23G or 25G microsurgery for complex issues like vitreous hemorrhage or macular holes.
– Pneumatic Retinopexy: A minimally invasive technique using gas bubbles to reattach the retina in specific types of detachments.
Yes. If the retina detaches from its blood supply for too long, vision loss can become permanent. If you see a "curtain" over your vision, seek care immediately.
Dry ARMD is more common and involves slow thinning of the macula. Wet ARMD is more severe and involves growth of abnormal, leaking blood vessels. Wet ARMD needs urgent injections to prevent rapid vision loss.
Most retinal surgeries use local anesthesia with sedation, so you remain relaxed and pain-free but still awake. General anesthesia is available for more complex cases or anxious patients.
While the eye heals fairly quickly, it may take several weeks for final vision stabilization, especially if a gas or oil bubble was used during the procedure.
If a gas bubble was used during your surgery, you cannot fly until it has completely dissolved. The change in cabin pressure can dangerously raise eye pressure. Always consult with your surgeon before traveling.
