What is a Cornea?

The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. It plays a vital role in focusing light as it enters the eye. If the cornea loses its clarity or shape—whether from infection, genetics, or trauma—images can become blurred, distorted, or completely hidden. At Ranade Eye Centre, we focus on both the medical management of corneal diseases and the precise surgical restoration of the corneal surface.

DSEK (Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty):

This is a specialized "partial-thickness" transplant procedure that replaces only the innermost layer of the cornea (the endothelium).

DALK (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty):

We use this advanced technique for patients with diseases affecting the front and middle layers of the cornea, such as Keratoconus or scarring.

PK (Penetrating Keratoplasty):

For cases where all layers of the cornea are severely damaged or scarred, we perform traditional full-thickness corneal transplantation. Our surgeons use high-precision micro-surgical instruments and advanced suturing techniques in our NABH-certified operating theatres

Advanced Pterygium Excision with Autograft:

We offer a specialized "no-stitch" surgical approach for removing pterygium (a non-cancerous growth on the cornea). By using pharmaceutical-grade fibrin glue to secure a healthy conjunctival autograft over the excision site,

The Cornea Journey: What to Expect

Phase 1: Specialized Assessment  

Your journey starts with a detailed corneal check-up, including topography and cell counts, to determine which layers of your cornea need treatment.

Phase 2: The Procedure  

Surgeries are performed in our sterile, NABH-certified operating rooms. Depending on the technique (DSEK, DALK, or PK), the procedure is carried out with extreme precision under local or general anesthesia.

Phase 3: Gradual Restoration  

While “partial” transplants (DSEK/DALK) offer faster recovery, all corneal procedures involve a healing period where vision gradually clears as the new tissue integrates and the swelling goes down.
